West Portland MP admits US citizenship

    Tuesday, 08 January 2008

West Portland Member of Parliament Daryl Vaz Tuesday admitted that he is a US citizen and holds US and Jamaican passports.

Mr. Vaz made the disclosure Tuesday while giving testimony at the election petition hearing in which defeated Peoples National Party candidate Abe Dabdoub is trying to unseat him.

Mr. Vaz, who was called Tuesday for the first time, told the hearing that he has been in possession of a US passport since 1978.

He testified that he has had four US passports between 1978 and this year.

The last US passport was issued to him in 2004.

The West Portland MP, who has come under fire from Mr. Dabdoub, also admitted that he has been travelling as a US citizen since being appointed State Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister in September.

Under cross examination from Mr. Dabdoub's attorneys, Mr. Vaz admitted that in October last year he travelled to Canada, St. Maarten, Antigua and Turks and Cacois as a US citizen.

During the cross examination, the attorneys also showed Mr. Vaz a US immigration card which he signed.

The card stated that he is not permitted to work in Jamaica and should leave the country by Wednesday January 9.

Mr. Vaz admitted that he signed the immigration card, but stated that he had no plans to leave the island Wednesday.

Mr. Dabdoub who was defeated by Mr. Vaz in the September election wants the court to remove Mr. Vaz as MP.

He claimed that Mr. Vaz holds dual citizenship which is a breach of the constitution and bars him from remaining as MP.

    The hearing continues Wednesday.

did anyone have any doubts that he held a us passport? this is not exactly breaking news.

1978....how old was he in 1978?

"Mr. Vaz admitted that in October last year he travelled to Canada, St. Maarten, Antigua and Turks and Cacois as a US citizen"

Was he on gov't business on these travels? This would really be a stupid move.

The most stupid was to land in Jamaica on a US passport!

Well, yuh travelling on the nation's business, at least use documents that identify you as a representative of the country you're doing business for.

No but what of "During the cross examination, the attorneys also showed Mr. Vaz a US immigration card which he signed.

The card stated that he is not permitted to work in Jamaica and should leave the country by Wednesday January 9."?

Whereas I knew(thanks to sickko) that he used his US passport, the article confirmed it.

Vaz has to be seriously wounded after that hearing.

what is the big deal? Vaz never say him a nuh US Citizen?

If Vaz lose the seat and there is a by election Daboub can't win, and if he get the seat Bruce Golding should call a general election right away and replace Vaz, this time with a better candidate.

                      Simple as that.

Well, thats the hope ... that the court will rule that Daboub should be the MP. They're not interested in by elections ... I think before the case started, Daboub filed an injunction to prevent Vaz from resigning.

As far as I am concerned the seat was never contested by the JLP.
According to US Immigration, Vaz is NOT permitted to work in Ja, and Mr.Vaz insists on flying wid US passport.
                          Whofah laws will Vaz respect?

US immigration laws is not important here. The question is what does the Jamaican constitution says. Vaz at no time denied he was an American citizen, the argument is if he had sworn allegiance.

Does it matter what he flys on? Would you be happier if he still had dual citizenship but flew on his Jamaican passport?
