  • Government and unions to discuss new MOU and job cuts

Job cuts at the Jamaica Urban Transit Company, (JUTC), and upcoming wage negotiations for Government workers, will top the agenda of a meeting with senior trade union officials Tuesday.

The meeting will involve members of the Monitoring Committee of the Public Sector Memorandum of Understanding, (MOU).

In November, the JUTC attempted to make several positions redundant.

However, it was prevented from doing so after trade unions raised strong objection.

They insisted that the matter first be discussed by the Monitoring Committee.

President of the National Workers Union, Vincent Morrison, says other job cuts in the public sector will also be discussed at the meeting in addition to a number of breaches to the current MOU.

MOU monitoring committee meets for the first time this year

      Tuesday, 08 January 2008

Talks are underway involving members of the Monitoring Committee of the Public Sector Memorandum of Understanding.

In what is the first meeting of the year for the Committee, senior trade union bosses are expected to discuss the upcoming wage negotiations for Government workers.

The issue of job cuts at the cash-strapped Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) is also on the agenda.

However UAWU president Lambert Brown says its early days yet.

"What will happen today is that the committee will get a report that there is a request for restructuring. It will be sent to a sub-committee monitoring committee that will review it. There is no way that today's meeting without any information to the parties will entertain any discussion on the request," said Mr. Brown.

"If the minister doesn't know they didn't support the MOU, they don't understand what the MOU is about and so they are gleefully jumping up about laying off or firing 300 workers. My God, how can the government that says they are for jobs, jobs and more jobs be so happy to lay off workers," he continued.

In November, the JUTC management attempted to make several positions redundant.

However, it was prevented from doing so after trade unions raised strong objection and insisted that the matter first be discussed by the Monitoring Committee.

Are all these people programmed to say the same bull5hit? So because the gov't is all for jobs, jobs and more jobs that means the JUTC must not be efficiently operated? The more I hear all these idiots talk the more I can see why they wanted Portia as PM.
