  • PM urged to postpone appointing new PSC members

The furore over the appointment of new members to the Public Service Commission (PSC) has taken on new life.

Opposition leader, Portia Simpson-Miller Friday called on Prime Minister Bruce Golding to refrain from appointing new members to the Public Service Commission.

Chief among the arguments is that the time is not right.

Mrs. Simpson-Miller says the matter surrounding the dismissal of the former PSC members will be heard in court in less than a week.

She reiterated that former Commission members were appointed by consensus between former Prime Minister P.J. Patterson and then opposition leader Edward Seaga.

Mrs. Simpson-Miller says the same should be done this time around.

However the RJR News understands that the Prime Minister has already written to the Governor General recommending new members.

According to Government sources, the Prime Minister submitted the names of four of the members to the Governor General last week.

The fifth member of the commission was recommended by the Civil Service Association and that name has also been submitted to the Governor General.

It is understood that Kings House should be announcing the new PSC members early next week.

The Government and Opposition have been at odds since late last year when the Prime Minister advised the Governor General to dismiss the members of the commission.

Mr. Golding cited gross misconduct as the reason for his decision.

But the opposition has rejected this claim and has gone to court seeking judicial review of the decision.
