  • Early childhood institutions crying foul

    Wednesday, 02 January 2008
A group of early childhood educators is taking issue with the Early Childhood Commission over the cost of complying with new regulations instituted in November.

The group of St. Catherine based educators, claims the government is moving to regulate early childhood institutions at the expense of the many churches and private individuals who run them.

Spokesman for the group, Ricardo Hall, says the churches and other individuals provide a valuable service to communities which will be lost if they are unable to afford the cost of meeting the requirements of the Early Childhood Commission:

He says Churches and private individuals have been offering the services not as a profit making venture but as a community effort and if all they stopped offering this service, then government would have to spend billions to build schools to accommodate hundreds of displaced children.

Mr. Hall says the group is seeking a meeting with the Early Childhood Commission to look at other ways of ensuring proper registration.

In November, the Ministry of Education announced new regulations for all early childhood institutions, requiring that they apply for registration with the Commission by February this year.

Institutions which meet the requirements will be given a full certificate of registration.
