CARACAS, Venezuela, Sept 29 (Reuters) - A strong earthquake hit Trinidad and Venezuela on Friday but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to property, including to the South American country's oil installations, Gustavo Malave, head of Venezuela's seismological institute told local media.

The epicenter of the 6.1 magnitude quake was on the Caribbean island of Trinidad, which lies a few miles (kilometers) off the coast of Venezuela, according to the Venezuelan seismological institute.

The U.S. Geological Survey's earthquake monitoring center said the quake hit at 9:08 a.m. (1308 GMT) at a depth of 38.9 miles (62.6 km). Such a magnitude typically can cause considerable damage to poorly built structures, and slight to moderate damage in well built structures.
