  • Jamaica listed among counties with food crisis

The Food and Agriculture Organisation, (FAO), has listed Jamaica among nations in the region facing a food crisis.

Other countries listed on a reported released Thursday are, St Lucia, Dominica and Haiti.

The FAO said these countries are not producing food at the required levels to support the local demand, resulting in sky-rocketing food prices and major shortages.

The FAO said as a result, Jamaica and the other countries will be in need of foreign assistance due to the shortfall in food supplies.

It said the situation is linked to floods caused by tropical storms, with several crops being devastated during the passage of Hurricane Dean in October, which led to a hike in price for the commodities.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)

Myriad reasons why we are not producing adequately, some of which we are not to be blamed. There are reasons why Manley's cry of self reliance was vehemently opposed.
Truth is vast amount of out Farin money has always been slated for importing the very things we routinely produced. That was encouraged and institutionalized.
      As if anything changed.
