Packer
Dr. Claude Packer, principal of the Mico University College, has received the Ministry of Education's EduVision top award for his sterling contribution as one of the outstanding mathematicians of the African Diaspora.
Known as 'the guru' of mathematics in Jamaica, Dr. Packer, with more than 30 years of service to education, contends there are many persons with similar talents that need to be harnessed.
"As an educator, I feel compelled to say that there are several Dr. Packers out there whose talents are being wasted ... something has to be done quickly to hone these talents," lamented Dr. Packer, shortly after receiving his award at the Sunset Grande Resort in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, recently.
According to Dr. Packer, mathematics can play a significant role in transforming the economy.
"We have some of the best and brightest, world-class mathematicians here in Jamaica. We all need to find a way to keep them engaged and use their expertise to enhance economic development."
