    Britain to tighten visa requirements

    Tuesday, December 18, 2007

BRITAIN will today outline proposals for a stricter visa regime that will make it more difficult for Jamaicans and nationals from several other countries to obtain immigrant and non-immigrant visas to that European country.
Details of the new visa regime are expected to be given today in a consultation report to be released by the United Kingdom Home Office.
Yesterday, press officer at the British High Commission in Kingston, Michelle Callus, said details on any possible effects on Jamaicans will come after the report is published.
Included in the proposals, according to a report yesterday by Bloomberg News, is for families to post a cash bond for relatives who plan to visit.
The money will only be refunded when the relative returns home.
The report outlines measures for visitors for business, tourism or family reasons to comply with the terms of their visas, Callus told the Observer yesterday.
Of 16,070 non-settlement visa applications received at the British High Commission in Kingston in 2005/2006, 8,942 were issued. Figures for 2007 were not readily available yesterday.
