PNP calls JLP government a miserable failure!

The People's National Party (PNP) has assessed the first 100 days of the Bruce Golding led administration as a miserable failure.

Party President Portia Simpson-Miller, made the comment at the party's headquarters in St. Andrew on Monday.

Her criticism centred on the three areas the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) placed at the centre of its election campaign - crime, the economy and governance.

With regards to crime, she charged that homicides are up, October was the bloodiest month to date and Jamaicans feel less safe than before.

The Party President conceded that taming crime required a long term fix, but said the government is not doing enough.

Of the economy, the PNP's criticism centred on Audley Shaw's promises.

The party said he promised more jobs, a reduced debt burden and a better managed economy.

But the PNP charged that the debt burden has worsened, the dollar is continues to slip and food prices have spiralled.

The party also dismissed claims by the JLP that it inherited an economic nightmare from the PNP administration.

The recent behaviour of three JLP Junior ministers did not escape attention, as the PNP assessed the JLP's track record on governance.

The PNP President branded the actions of Robert Montague, Everald Warmington and Daryl Vaz, unbecoming of ministers.

The sacking of the members of the Public Services Commission, was labelled by Mrs. Simpson-Miller as evidence that the Prime Minister is only paying lip service to the constitution.

OPPOSITION Leader Portia Simpson Miller yesterday gave the Jamaica Labour Party Government a 'failing grade' for its performance in its first 100 days in office.
"We find this Government guilty of failure in a number of areas; they failed miserably in the first 100 days. Those promises they did not break, they changed. They have spent the first two months trying to cast blame on the former administration," said Simpson Miller.
"For this exam there can be no resit, the 100 days are gone," she quipped.
The opposition leader was speaking at a press conference at the People's National Party (PNP) headquarters on Old Hope Road in Kingston.
"The Government continues to major in minor matters and they are failing seriously to deal with critical and important issues of the day," Simpson Miller told reporters.
"We are calling on the Government to answer to the promises made to the Jamaican people for the first 100 days in office," she urged.
She said signs of the new Government's failure were evident in the increased levels of crime and violence seen in the country since it took office on September 11; the continued devaluation of the Jamaican dollar and spiralling interest rates and food prices, among other things.
Furthermore, she said, instead of the creation of employment as promised during the political campaign leading up to the September 3 polls the JLP had axed several persons from various posts.
"There were promises of jobs, jobs, jobs and we found that the first thing they did was to ensure the jobs of people who were on their political platform during the election and at the same time quietly victimising people and sending people home or putting people on leave without any assurance that they would be called back to work and creating uncertainty and serious challenges for families," Simpson Miller said.
"I'm not into personalities, when I took over at Jamaica House I never sent one person home, I never checked people's political affiliation.," she added.
It was not clear if her reference to people being sent on leave was about workers at the National Solid Waste Management Authority who were sacked after the uncovering of several irregularities.
In the meantime, the opposition leader described the economy as "out of control", which, she said, was further confused by the appointment of three Cabinet ministers in the Ministry of Finance and Planning. It was unclear, she said, who was "responsible for the economy".
"No one now knows who speaks on economic matters. We do not know who is really in charge of the economy of the country," Simpson Miller said.
She also criticised the administration for the dismissal of members of the Public Service Commission, and said that she would this week respond to Prime Minister Golding's correspondence regarding the appointment of new members.
At the same time, Opposition MP Peter Bunting said the expectations of the new Government were far from unreasonable.
"Studies have shown that no administration can succeed in its first term what they don't start to do in the first few days," Bunting said.

On the newsclip I heard yesterday, she was saying how the new gov't has caused the exchange rate to get out of control. Well, looking at the monthly rate in January 2007 the rate was $67.37 at the end of August the rate was $69.19, I recall before the PM had even sworn in the rate had passed the $70 mark and at the end of October the rate was $71.03.

Under whose watch did the $ devalue more?

God forbid what Jamaica will be if the JUTC continue losing 1.2 billion a year, Air Jamaica continue losing them shirt, Sugar continue losing it shirt, NSWA continue to be 600 million in debt and the Budget is over ran by 15 billion a year.

Why don't she talk even some sense with the none sense?

Not one moment claiming all those entities should continue spiralling out of control...but, what would be the situation if in other areas earnings 'went through the roof' such that those losses were as 'nothing'?

Just wondering, if it is as it appears the underlying thought is those entites, are a huge part of our current problems...

...what about earnings in areas where those 'lost items'...or, as the retailer would say - lead items losses were far outperformed by the profit items???

Yuh nuh like di retailer who sells some trifling trinket that draws in parents with kids and encourages and has the parentw themselves purchasing the high profit items?
