The stage of the Stone Love Anniversary became a boxing ring yesterday morning, as blows were exchanged between dancehall sensation Munga Honorebel and upcoming Portmore Empire artiste Deva Bratt.
The fracas was said to have begun about 4:45 a.m., when Deva Bratt walked onstage during the performance of his recent lyrical nemesis at the popular event, staged this year at Mas Camp, Oxford Road.
Munga had just concluded introducing his new song Talk Dem a Talk in which he openly disses Deva Bratt, who attempted to enter the stage but was blocked by someone from Munga's entourage. Deva Bratt went on to push this person from the stage and approached Munga, who hit him in the face with the microphone.
"Mi frighten when mi see him (Deva Bratt) walk on pon Munga performance, caa a di tightest stage security mi eva see ... next ting mi know man a fly off stage, Munga all afi draw him knife," said the prominent artiste, who asked not to be named.
But Deva Bratt said his motives were completely lyrical.
"Is like him a perform to a dead crowd an him seh bout man who a call up him name fi 'do tings', suh mi seh mi a gi di crowd some joy. When mi reach up, a one a Munga follower dem dat a follow mi every step an a grounds mi suh mi ease him off the stage," said the Portmore Empire elite. "Next ting is either Munga cunk mi wit di mike or fist me, suh mi gi him a couple of punches an him draw a knife."
Effort to contact Munga proved futile up to press time, but a source close to the artiste viewed Deva's action as disrespect to the industry.
"A dem deh kind of behaviour a ugly up di music business, man fi respect show promoter an dem rule, especially as a artiste weh jus a bus an a behave suh," said the industry player.
Deva Bratt says he regrets the incident but will not stop from attempts to engage Munga, who he strongly feels is a coward, in lyrical confrontation.
