Cops kill five men in Westmoreland, Kingston

THE police on Saturday night outgunned four men, killing them all in an alleged gun battle along the Bay Road main road in Westmoreland.
Earlier that day, the police also fatally shot a man at White Hall Avenue, Kingston 8, after the man allegedly brandished a firearm at them. The dead man has been identified as 25-year old Howard Shane Clarke, of White Hall Avenue.
According to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), up to yesterday, only two of the four men who were killed in Westmoreland had been identified. They are 36-year-old Clifton Walters and 24-year-old Devin Parkinson, both of whom were from Seaton Crescent in Westmoreland. The police were unable to say whether the men were linked to any criminal activities.
Information from the CCN is that at approximately 8:00 pm, a police party was carrying out patrol duties along the Bay Road main road when they noticed a Toyota Corolla motorcar approaching. The driver of the car was signalled to stop, and he obeyed. However, after the driver parked the car, four men brandishing guns allegedly alighted from the vehicle and opened fire at the police officers.
The officers returned the fire, and after the shooting subsided it was discovered that the four had all been shot. They were taken to the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital where they were all pronounced dead.
Police said they recovered a M1 rifle and a forty-caliber pistol, as well as three cartridges for each weapon.
The Bureau of Special Investigations (BSI) has since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the four men.
Meanwhile, the CCN also reported that at approximately 12:15 pm on Saturday a police team responded to reports that shots were being fired in White Hall Avenue.
Shortly after arriving in the community, members of the patrol team spotted Clarke, who allegedly pulled a firearm from his waistband, before being shot dead by the cops.
A Springfield 9mm semi-automatic pistol with six rounds of ammunition were allegedly taken from his body.
In the meantime, over the weekend gunmen also snuffed out the lives of 28-year-old businessman Cleve Salmon, of Franklyn Town, Kingston; 45-year-old Donald Stewart of 7 East, Greater Portmore, St Catherine, and 34-year-old Andrew 'Kya' Guthrie of Rae Town, Kingston.
