Police Federation backs Lewin Friday, 14 December 2007
The Jamaica Police Federation has accepted the selection of Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin as the next Commissioner of Police.
The former Army Chief is to take up the post on Monday, December 17.
The Police Commissioner was selected by the Police Service Commission (PSC), and approved by the Governor General.
Initially, the Federation which represents rank and file members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), raised concerns regarding the procedure employed by the PSC in selecting a replacement for the post of Commissioner of Police.
As news surfaced that the post would have been advertised, Federation members raised objections.
They said knowledgeable, hardworking and honest individuals within the JCF had the capacity to lead.
However, the Federation changed its stance on the matter, after discussions were held with their members, who had an opportunity to properly air their concerns.
The Federation said Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin has served the country for 36 years and at this time has come forward to offer further service.
It added that it is imperative that the entire organisation begin to work on a shared set of goals and objectives.
