Minister of Social Security Pearnel Charles has placed a halt on the distribution of Hurricane Dean relief cheques.
This follows the discovery of discrepancies in the system.
Mr. Charles says his Ministry has had to curtail the distribution of cheques due to what he described as several irregularities.
"Hundreds of thousands of dollars of cheques have been withdrawn because the names that are on the list in some instances there are no such persons, in some instances it is a family applying with various names for the same house, in some instances there are tenants who apply when they are not the owner of the house," said Mr. Charles.
"In Clarendon alone we have withdrawn 67 cheques. We have been withdrawing cheques from people who have been puttng in wrong categories, saying that they have lost a whole house when they have lost maybe a few sheets of zinc," he continued.
He said the Ministry is taking steps to clean up the lists and ensure those who are in need, benefit from the relief programme.
Mr. Charles says personnel from the Ministry will be visiting the homes of beneficiaries to verify their circumstances.
