  • Fight looming over the post of Police Commissioner

The Police Officers Association (POA) and the authorities are on the brink of a legal showdown over the appointment of Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin as Commissioner of Police.

Members of the POA are in the process of hiring an attorney to take their case to the Supreme Court.

Members of the Central Executive met Wednesday with attorney-at-law Bert Samuels.

Senior members of the executive told the RJR News that they will be seeking an injunction to block the appointment of Mr. Lewin, pending the outcome of a suit filed against the Police Service Commission.

Mr. Samuels confirmed that he is now in discussions with the POA.

Chairman of the POA, Superintendent Norman Heywood also confirmed the meeting, but he declined to talk about the discussions.

The POA is contending that the Police Services Commission breached section 17 of the Police Service Regulation when it advertised the post of Police Commissioner before interviewing any of the senior officers.

Rear Admiral Lewin is expected to take up his post on December 17.

The former army chief will be on contract with the JCF on gratuity terms, for three years.

Admiral Lewin replaces former Commissioner Lucius Thomas, who retired in October.

He will be Jamaica's 26th Commissioner of Police.

It is understood that the Police Federation, which represents rank-and-file members, plans to support the POA.

this is just plain idiotic... what do they hope to accomplish with this lawsuit... while the psc action might have breached the psr, i cannot see how this lawsuit will accomplish anything substantial in this battle... they would have been better off saving their money for a real war...

Karl - wasn't the position advertized?

Why them so high strung now, it's not the first time someone from the Army has been given the top job.

Were they outraged/enraged when a foreigner - Mark Shields was given the job of Deputy Commissioner?

              Mi just asking.

Apparently officers within the force should have been interviewed and after that 'interview process' the post can be advertised. The claim is the post was advertised before any officer within the force was interviewed.

Police who have been in the force for over 5 years should be ineligible for the position. They have presided over rot, corruption and murder and nary a word from them while that was going on. Mek dem move and gwey!

well, that wouldn't be fair would it. Unless evidence is presented that they were involved in any such thing, they couldn't be prevented from applying.

In my organization - the post is advertized before any interviewing is done. So why the backside didn't they apply for the position.

They should first provide evidence that they sought to put an end to the friggery. They all know the crap that takes place within the force! Every single last one of them!

Applying for the position means putting down he gun for few minutes. It means getting off the road for a few minutes and doing without road users money. It means sitting for a few minutes while the crooks buy ammunition from someone else.

                              Who have time fi dat!?
