  • JUTC accidents hike up insurance costs

The state-run Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) is facing an increase in insurance costs following nearly 400 accidents involving its buses.

According to information obtained by RJR News over the past 22 months they have been 376 accidents involving 64 drivers.

Member of JUTC's Board Dennis Chung says in addition to an increase in insurance premiums, the cash strapped company is struggling with several lawsuits arising from the accidents.

"The company does not have an inability to get insurance what it has is increased insurance costs because of the accidents, the less accidents you have is the lower your insurance costs so if we can drive the accident rate down then it means that our costs in terms of insurance and our lawsuit will also go down which means less cost for the taxpayers of Jamaica," said Mr. Chung.

He did not provide a monetary figure on total costs incurred by he company due to the accidents.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
