Head of the Clarendon Police, Superintendent Radcliffe Lewis is calling on the government to declare a state of emergency in Clarendon and four other police divisions.
In an interview with RJR News, Superintendent Lewis said crime is way out of control and the state of emergency would give the police more powers to deal with the crisis.
He said the other divisions with serious crime problems are St. James, St. Catherine North and South and the corporate area.
He added that the Jamaica Defence Force should also be deployed to assist the police in crime fighting.
But speaking on Television Jamaica's (TVJ's) current affairs programme, ‘All Angles' on Sunday, National Security Minister Derrick Smith categorically ruled out the possibility of imposing a state of emergency, even in limited geographical areas.
According to Mr. Smith, the government does not believe that giving the police additional powers under a state of emergency is necessary.
