  • Former Attorney General challenges new AG

FormerAttorney General challenges new AG Friday, 30 November 2007 Former Attorney General Senator A.J. Nicholson challenged the appropriateness of Attorney General and Justice Minister Dorothy Lightbourne naming Stephen Vasciannie in her presentation in the Senate Friday.

Senator Nicholson contends that Professor Vasciannie is merely a member of staff in the Attorney General's office who participated in the deliberations.

Senator Nicholson contends that it was the Attorney General office's which advanced the legal opinion and not a member of staff.

Mr. Nicholson defended the People's National Party (PNP) administration's decision not to allow Dutch investigators into the island.

He contends that if the crime of bribery was committed in Jamaica, local investigators should be called.

Mr. Nicholson accused Prime Minister Bruce Golding of resorting to Dutch investigators as he does not have legal basis to initiate such a course in Jamaica.

He warned that if a bribery case against Trafigura is pursued in the Netherlands, the Opposition would be demanding that investigations are carried out in Jamaica as well.

Mr. Nicholson declared that none of Jamaica's first seven Prime Ministers from Alexander Bustamante to Portia Simpson Miller had ever called on another political leader to explain a campaign donation.
