  • Energy surcharge to be imposed on hotel rooms

A special energy surcharge could be imposed on hotel rooms come next month.

The Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) is proposing the levy to help its members offset the increase in fuel costs.

The daily surcharge at the high end will be 10 US dollars per room.

President of the JHTA Wayne Cummings, told RJR News that a recommendation has been made for the surcharge to take effect on December 15.

That is the official start of the Winter Tourist Season.

Mr. Cummings explained that the JHTA has taken into consideration the possible effects of the surcharge on the sector and visitors to the island.

He says the fee is charged in other international markets and there has been no fallout in those tourism sectors.

"We would not be the first either in the region or internationally, it is something that is beign mooted right across the tourism sector on cruises, airlines and hotels" said Mr. Cummings.

"We have prices that are set with our travel partners and we are unable to move those but we have to be able to pass on some of these unusual increases to the actual end-user, the customer. But it must be done according to their needs and affordability," he continued.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
