The motion according legal strength to a ministerial order allowing Dutch Authorities to investigate the oil lifting firm Trafigura Beheer in Jamaica was tabled in the Senate on Friday.
The motion, which was approved at Tuesday's sitting of the House of Representatives, is in keeping with a mutual assistance treaty, of which Jamaica and the Netherlands are a part.
The motion is to be debated at the next sitting of the Senate.
Justice Minister Dorothy Lightbourne said that under the Mutual Assistant Criminal Matters Act, where any treaty is made with any foreign states, the minister may declare that the provisions of the Act should apply in respect of such foreign state.
Tuesday's sitting of the House of Representatives saw a brief stand off between the government and parliamentary Opposition, before the matter was debated.
Minority House Leader Fitz Jackson, in the absence of Leader of Opposition Business in the House, Dr. Peter Phillips, argued that his side was not ready.
This was countered by Leader of Government Business, Derrick Smith and Prime Minister Bruce Golding who piloted the debate.
The Dutch investigators probing the case want to speak with the senior members of the People's National Party (PNP) who were involved in the controversy over a $31 million donation from Tafigura Beheer as well as Mr. Golding, who had initially invited them into the island.
