BOSCOBEL, ST MARY - People's National Party president and opposition leader, Portia Simpson Miller, says she is prepared to go to jail for the protection and defence of the Jamaican people.
"I see some little things happening in Jamaica like what is happening now in Pakistan. Well, I just want to say here and now, in terms of the protection and the defence of the rights of the Jamaican people, I am prepared to go to jail any day in the interest of the Jamaican people," Simpson Miller said to thunderous applause.
She was speaking here Monday night to hundreds of party supporters at the town's primary school in a post-nomination day rally.
The PNP president said a recent statement by Security Minister Derrick Smith suggested that the governing Jamaica Labour Party was targeting the PNP.
Said Simpson Miller: "I have," he said, "a squad to lock up officials of the PNP. He did not name anybody, it seems all officials of the party."
She added: "No other minister of national security in the history of Jamaica has ever made any statement like that."
She said that the JLP, while in opposition, had called for non-interference in the work of the police, and alleged that the party was now giving instructions to the police.
Simpson Miller alleged that the first instruction given to the police by Smith was after she made the statement that she would be watching every move the JLP made. Smith, she alleged, instructed then commissioner Lucius Thomas to investigate whether her comments constituted danger.
".And now I know why the former commissioner left," Simpson Miller said.
