Schools to begin tuition refunds on Monday
Principals and school administrators islandwide are scheduled to begin the process of refunding tuition fees on Monday morning.
In September the government promised to abolish tuition fees and refund parents who had already paid for the current academic year.
However hundreds of parents had by then paid over tuition fees subsequently leading to a rush on school administrators for a refund.
Addressing Parliament on November 6, Education Ministry Andrew Holness said his agency is on target to start refunding secondary school tuition fees.
Principal of Jamaica College, Ruel Reid says most schools will organise their own procedures for the refunding of the tuition fees.
Approximately $750 million has been released to refund parents and to reimburse school accounts.
Mr. Holness said based on figures collected from secondary schools, expected refunds will be in the region of $276 million.
In the meantime Mr. Reid says respective school administrators are working towards a smooth refunding process.
Schools have been instructed to make refunds by cheque only, and no deductions are to be withheld from the refundable amount.
All disbursement of refunds must be completed by December 19.
Refunds not collected by that date will remain with the schools to be used towards development activities.
