Sunday, November 18, 2007
FOUR days after he was sworn in as prime minister on September 11, Bruce Golding racked up a $1.3 million travel bill.
GOLDING... made two trips three days apart
The occasion was the prime minister's first official trip, a one-day visit to the Summit on Communicable Diseases and the caucus of heads of government of Caricom in Trinidad and Tobago on September 15.
Documents obtained under the Access to Information Act indicate that the prime minister travelled by chartered plane at a cost of US$ 17,764 ($1.261 million) to the summit. Contingency money and per diem allowances for the prime minister and members of the delegation - permanent secretary Patricia Sinclair McCalla, the prime minister's assistant, Patricia Reid and two members of the prime minister's security team- amounted to US$1,640.
Three days later, on September 18, the prime minister was off again by chartered aircraft to the funeral of the late Sir John Compton, former prime minister of St Lucia, from where he returned the same day.
This time, the cost of the aircraft as invoiced by Super Clubs International was US$16,844 ($1.79 million.)
The per diem allowances for the prime minister and members of the delegation - former prime ministers PJ Patterson and Edward Seaga, Seaga's wife Carla, and Golding's assistant Reid- amounted to US$195 or just over $13, 800.
The ATI documents state that funds were taken from the $26,255,000 approved for official overseas visits. Golding is expected to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala, Uganda later this month.
Last year, it was reported that former prime minister Portia Simpson Miller had accumulated a JA$10 million travel bill in seven months.
