PNP criticises Security Minister Friday, 16 November 2007

The Opposition People's National Party (PNP) has taken issue with a statement made by National Security Minister Derrick Smith in a meeting in the Tivoli Gardens Wednesday night.

According to Mr. Smith, he has a team of police waiting to lock up members of the former government, whom he claims, stole public funds.

The statement has generated anger within the PNP.

In a release Friday afternoon, the Party says it condemns what it describes as Mr. Smith's intemperate outburst.

The PNP asserts that the Minister's conduct goes against the grain of decency and runs counter to the precedents established by all previous Ministers of that portfolio.

They contend that it is dangerous to politicize the Ministry of National Security, which exists to direct policy relating to law and order, irrespective of political affiliation.

The PNP said the Minister should stop interfering with the operational role of the Jamaica Constabulary force, (JCF).
