National Security Minister Derrick Smith said an independent body which will investigate police excesses will become a reality by the end of the year.
He made the announcement at Wednesday's official opening of the newly constructed Sligoville police station in St Catherine.
Mr. Smith said the unit is necessary as the public has lost faith in the manner in which police cases are investigated.
He said this independent body will accelerate the rate of police investigations.
The police station which was built next to the Sligoville multipurpose complex at a cost of $222 million, will not only serve communities in and around Silgoville but sections of St Andrew.
