  • Tuition refunding hitch

There are indications that the refund of tuition fees by school administrators is not going smoothly.

Since the process began just under a week ago, our News Centre has been receiving calls from parents claiming that the schools which their children attend were reluctant to refund the money.

It is understood that some schools have asked parents to voluntarily donate the fees to the schools' development fund.

But other parents are claiming that some schools are using an adversarial approach in trying to get them to donate the fees to the schools.

Chief Executive Officer at the Ministry of Education Jasper Lawrence told RJR News that the schools have been provided with the money to make the refunds. He said the ministry outlined that all refunds were to be made by cheques and records of the transactions kept by the schools.

Mr. Lawrence stated that no money should be withheld from the amounts to be refunded.

He is advising all parents experiencing difficulty, to contact the Ministry's regional office in their area or call his office directly.

During its election campaign the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) promised that children would receive free education at the secondary level.

Following the JLP's victory in the September 3rd polls, new Education Minister Andrew Holness, pledged that parents who had already paid tuition fees would be refunded.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
