  • Government to resurrect the Trafigura Affair

Several months after the People's National Party (PNP) said it had put the Trafigura Affair to rest the Bruce Golding-led administration is moving to place the matter back in the public domain.

RJR News has been informed that a statement is to be made in Parliament Tuesday afternoon on developments concerning the controversial $31 million donation from the Dutch-based firm.

The issue rocked the then PNP Government late last year and led to the resignation of Colin Campbell, who was Minister of Information and Development.

Prior to assuming office the Jamaica Labour Party had asked the Dutch Government to investigate matters surrounding the donation.

Bruce Golding, who was then Opposition Leader, said the Dutch Government dispatched a letter stating that it was prepared to conduct a joint probe with local police.

However, Mr. Golding said the Dutch authorities indicated that they could proceed only if the Jamaican Government gave the green light.

The JLP had also demanded that a formal enquiry be held into the circumstances which led to the contribution.

Trafigura officials have maintained that the money given to the PNP was part of a commercial transaction.

Earlier this year, PNP President Portia Simpson-Miller ordered that the money be returned.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
