Some hotels have reportedly slashed their rates in a bid to boost bookings for the 2007 Winter Tourist Season which officially begins in four weeks.
According to President of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA), Wayne Cummings, in some cases there have been heavy price discounting.
He says the discounts are being used as a tool to increase arrivals which declined earlier this year.
Mr. Cummings told RJR News that the rate cuts have so far had some impact as bookings for the period have started to pick up.
"The phones are ringing, people are actually booking. A lot o f it is happening in the face of some discounting, some of it being very significant. Chain properties are seeing more positive booking than the smaller hotels," said Mr. Cummings.
"The small hotels, while they are optimistic they are continuing to do a lot of work to try and bolster their numbers, that is the segment that continues to concern me but there is some work that has to be done both nationally in terms of definition marketing as well as some targeted property marketing," he continued.
