  • Labour Ministry dispatches safety inspectors islandwide

In response to what it says is a marked increase in breaches of occupational safety rules at construction sites the Ministry of Labour will on Thursday start dispatching teams to conduct random inspections.

Labour Minister Pearnel Charles says the decision was based on the large number of accidents at construction sites since the start of the year.

He told RJR News that several inspectors have been assembled conduct checks.

"And we put together our factory and field inspectors to start visiting factories and construction sites all over Jamaica to see that the builders and operators live up to the rules and regulations. We just want to call on the contractors and the owners of buildings to be cooperative with the inspectors," said Mr. Charles.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)

If they are increasing the inspections, great! But my concern is how far the inspections go.

Not convinced that OSHA is the standard though. I do believe there are more accidents in the US than in Jamaica.
