  • Gov’t announces changes to Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium

The Jamaica Labour Party led administration is making changes to the operations of the Trelawny Multi-Purpose Stadium complex.

According to the government, the facility which was built specifically for the opening of the Cricket World Cup last March has been grossly under utilised since the event.

Speaking at Tuesday's Post Cabinet Press briefing, Minister of Industry, Commerce and Investment, Karl Samuda says a committee has been formed to work out how the multimillion dollar complex will be run.

He said at present the facility takes some $3 million per month to maintain.

The government also has plans to transfer the responsibility of running the complex which was under the Commerce Ministry to the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports.

Mr. Samuda added that the committee will examine if it is viable for the facility to be totally government run.

He added that the running of the facility will be financed up to March 2008 with funds made available by Jamaica Trade and Invest, JAMPRO and the National Housing Trust.

This comprises a total of $18 million.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)

Has any other country ever built a stadium just for an opening ceremony, without a plan in place for further use?
