The elite US universities are still leading in advanced research and producing people who turn those research projects into profitable companies though. I agree completely with Jawge on that.
No one was disputing that the US still leads research and development. The fact is, many countries are catching up and it may not be long before the tables are turned.
What statistics is showing is that the majority of students in advanced engineering programs in the "elite schools" are foreigners, not Americans. So while the schoold are "elite" , they are preparing opportunities for these foreign countries to train their brightest. This coupled with the fact that a lot of engineering jobs are being created abroad, what do you think will happen when these foreigners complete their studies?

Anyway, I invite you to read the three articles I provided Jawge too Islandman.

At a morning press conference, Home Secretary John Reid

When asked to comment on the arrest, Prime Minister Tony Blair,

speaking from his holiday resort before the planes stopped flying,

said, "If God had wanted us to have better Weapons of Maths

doesn't understand the dynamics of this thing. If you look closley at US history, you will see that from the start it was immigrants that shaped the US (rocketry, computer science et al). It's just that a new set of immigrants are stepping up, that's all. The Us SYSTEM FOSTERS CREATIVITY. When this sytem is removed then you can look for a close but not any time soon.

                  The US HAS no strategy.

                  Stateless Corporations run things.

What U all fail to recognize is that R&D inevitably follows manufacturing. I can be no other way.

Again, I say that R&D always follows manufacturing.

Will the US have a significant car industry in 5 years?

                            Stop making assumptions!

Its not about intelligence. Its about systems. The US political system is broken and the nation is no longer cohesive.

You need to look at the data and read the really insightful people.

How do you think i have been able to spot long term trends and make some accurate predictions. It is in the data for thos who know how to interpret them. You also need a good model for understanding the forces at work. Believe what you will, I am not interested in convincing anyone.
