Cabinet could approve more vehicles for the JCF

    Friday, 26 October 2007
A submission is to be made to Cabinet on Monday for an increase in the number of vehicles for the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

National Security Minister, Derrick Smith, made the disclosure Thursday while touring the Police Transport and Repairs Division.

According to Mr. Smith, the police force currently has 1,300 vehicles.

This is 300 less than the required cadre.

Of the number of vehicles in use, more than 50 per cent are over five years old.

Another 27 per cent are more than 10 years old.

During the tour of the Transport Division, Mr. Smith expressed concern about the number of derelict vehicles on the premises.

He said he will be discussing the matter with Permanent Secretary Gilbert Scott with a view to disposing the vehicles quickly.
