  • to meet with human rights activists

Prime Minister Bruce Golding is slated to meet with some of the island's leading human rights activists Tuesday afternoon.

Mr. Golding has invited representatives of human rights groups to lunch at Vale Royal where several issues are expected to be discussed.

One issue expected to be placed at the top of the agenda is that of controversial killings by the police and a plan by the Prime Minister to create an independent body to probe the cases.

The issue of the death penalty is also expected to be discussed.

The new government has indicated that it intends to take the matter of the death penalty to Parliament with members being asked to vote based on their conscience.

However local human rights groups have uniformly argued against the death penalty.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
