Ten day deadline for illegal foreign workers could be extended Thursday, 18 October 2007 Minister of Labour Pearnel Charles says there could be an extension of the 10 day deadline for foreign workers in Jamaica to obtain permits.
However, Mr. Charles says this would be dependent on the level of response to his Ministry's new crackdown.
He announced Wednesday that his Ministry will be conducting an audit of the system used to issue work permits.
Mr. Charles said it was necessary as the Ministry has no data on the whereabouts of the 25,000 persons granted permits since 2002.
Mr. Charles said he has information on 5,000 valid permits but he is not sure if the other 20,000 permit holders are still in the island or have completed their contracts and returned home.
