  • Over a hundred JUTC workers’ jobs in limbo

The jobs of more than 100 employees of the cash-strapped Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) now hang in the balance.

Their names have reportedly been placed on a special watch list by the new management of the state-run bus company.

The list, comprising 114 names, was presented to officials of the Union of Clerical Administrative and Supervisory Employees (UCASE) when they met with management officials at the JUTC Wednesday.

But UCASE President Danny Roberts says he is unclear of the purpose of the special list.

Speaking with RJR News Wednesday night Mr. Roberts said he was informed that the list would not be used to carry out job cuts.

News of the special list comes less than two weeks after the new Board of the JUTC fired four senior managers as part of a reorganisation exercise.

The Board which was appointed earlier this month has been given 18 months to address the company's financial woes.

There were calls from some persons on call-in radio shows that there be no 'witch hunts' and 'revenge acts'.

Lists, national identification cards, explusion of foreign workers, sweeping out of boards and firing of other workers...etc, etc? Each separate and apart do not appear dangerous...but, are there other 'forceful moves' coming and if taken all together, against the backdrop of branding the former government of holding all jobs in the hands of the genetically connected...does it suggest a trend towards wholesale displacements of people, companies and other entities...a forerunner to a 'police state'?

    Just asking?
