It is now official. Former Opposition Spokeswoman on Commerce, Shirley Williams, is the new Chairman of the Board of the national airline Air Jamaica. Miss Williams is the first woman to head the airline in its 38 year history.
She takes over from O.K. Melhado who headed the previous Board.
Transport Minister Mike Henry has confirmed that Miss Williams' appointment, as well as the selection of the other members of the Air Jamaica Board, were approved by Cabinet Tuesday.
The names of the other Directors will be announced at Wednesday morning's post-Cabinet press briefing.
The new Board will be faced with the task of coming up with a new plan to halt Air Jamaica's losses.
Cabinet Tuesday also approved the appointment of Boards for eight other entities which fall under the Ministry of Transport and Works.
And the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) has welcomed Miss Williams' appointment.
JHTA President, Wayne Cummings, says the former Senator is the right person for the job.
"Mrs. Williams is very aware of the needs of the business sector and what she can bring to that board in terms of making the kind of change for efficiency is well known. We look forward to working with her. She is known for hard work and I don't think it would be any different with Air Jamaica," said Mr. Cummings.
In the meantime, the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) says there will be no honeymoon for the new Air Jamaica Board as it has to move quickly to address some of the pressing problems facing the airline.
"As far as we are concerned at the BITU we would want to meet with her as soon as possible to discuss the future plans for Air Jamaica and what role our membership can play in so far as the company is concerned," said Mr. Gayle.
The union represents 400 Air Jamaica flight attendants.
