  • Family of slain teen tries to take case to Privy Council

The family of slain teenager Janice Allen will on Tuesday morning make their application for final leave to appeal to the UK Privy Council.

Human rights lobby group, Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) is providing legal counsel for Janice's family.

Executive Director of JFJ, Dr. Carolyn Gomes, says the group is keeping its fingers crossed that leave will be granted to appeal the not guilty verdict handed down in the trial in 2004.

Dr. Gomes says she is confident the final leave to appeal will be granted as the legal team has fulfilled all the requirements on which it was granted provisional leave in February.

Janice was fatally shot in 2000 by a member of a police team in South St. Andrew.

The incident took place during a reported gun battle between the police and gunmen.

When the matter came up for trial in 2004 the prosecution did not present a case and the judge instructed the jury to return a not guilty verdict.

The family has been trying to get the verdict set aside in the local courts since that time.
"Jamaica's future reflects its past, having attained only one per cent annual growth over 30 years whilst neighbours have grown at five per cent." (Article)
