Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas resigns Wednesday, 10 October 2007 Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas is set to demit office at the end of this month.
Speaking exclusively with the RJR News Centre Wednesday morning, Mr. Thomas indicated that the Police Service Commission now has official documentation indicating his decision to terminate his contract.
When pressed for a reason, the police Commissioner would say no more than that his time had come and he had done his part.
Responding to questions about the timing of his move, Mr. Thomas indicated that he ascended to the position when morale in the force was low and he believes he played a role in helping to build it.
He told our news centre that there are senior officers who will be in a position to continue that work.
He advised his senior officers of his decision on Wednesday morning.
Commissioner Thomas has held the position for just under three of the four years of his contract which was set to expire early in 2009.
He leaves on October 31 after serving the force since 1969.
Tuesday, the Chief of Staff of the Jamaica Defence Force Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin announced his decision to demit office.
In the meantime, the Police Federation has expressed disappointment with Commissioner Thomas' decision to prematurely terminate his contract.
Speaking with the RJR News Centre General Secretary of the Federation, Corporal Hartley Stewart, said the Federation has confidence in the other senior officers of the Force who may be in line to be the next Police Commissioner.
"The police Federation is disappointed that we will not have Commissioner Thomas with us for as long as we had hoped, because we believe there is important work that he has started that he needs to continue," said Corporal Stewart.
"In saying that, however, we appreciate the fact that we have competent persons at the second and third tier of the organization and therefore we don't believe that we will be taking a backward step. But we must express our disappointment and that of the entire rank and file because we love this Commissioner," he continued.
