    NOTE-WORTHY - Cellphone ban
    published: Wednesday | October 10, 2007

    Cellphone ban
Part of a child's education is learning personal discipline. This includes waiting until break time to eat lunch; waiting until after school hours to go home; and waiting until the class is over to use the phone. Those parents who take issue with these maxims are only showing the rest of us the extent of their own lack of training.
Personally, I see no need for cellphones in schools. In emergency situations, a student can always get permission to use the school phone to call home. Mr. Holness needs to be firm enough to place a nationwide ban on cellphones in class. This might save the life of a future minister of education.

    Agreed!

...except - The student should always have his/her cellphone in his/her possession. That cellphone must always be within easy reach for fast use in emergency situations.

Such emergency situation could arise where it is not practical or it is impossible to move to either request permission to use a school designated telephone or even to move.

It should be easy to visualise situations whereby students having that access to their cell phones on their persons (schoolbags/pockets/attached to clothing, etc.) becoming beneficial to schools and the people on the school compound.

It is constitutional right for the school's to ban cellphones...or, for the children to have them?

There should be no problem with a child having a cellphone at school, if the rules are made quite clear - During all classes the cell phone should be turned off; no usage allowed during class time.
