Port Antonio hunt play-off spot

PORT ANTONIO, Portland — Port Antonio High can secure their place in the Zone L play-offs in the ISSA Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition this afternoon if they can avenge a first round loss to two-time finalist Titchfield High in their Zone L (a) return round clash at Cader Park.
Port Antonio lead the standings with seven points, one more than Titchfield and will be seeking their third win on the trot today against a struggling Titchfield side.
Titchfield have won just once in their opening game against Port Antonio and have managed just four goals in four games while conceding three.
Long shots Fair Prospect will be hoping for a win over Happy Grove and a win for Port Antonio High to stay in the race for a place in the play-offs.
The top two teams from each section of Zone L will meet in a playoff to decide the top two teams in the Zone and who to advance the Ben Francis Knockout.
On Thursday, Seaforth and St Thomas Technical booked their spots in the play-offs.
Meanwhile, five schools will be hoping to maintain their perfect win records as the return round gets underway in the majority of zones.
Former champions Cornwall College, Frome Technical and Clarendon College, Manchester High and Spalding have kept unblemished records so far and will hope to extend them today.
Clarendon College have been the most impressive so far, cruising through Zone H with six wins in the first round, scoring 22 goals while conceding just one.
Today they are away to Claude McKay who they beat 8-0 in the first round and should come away with another three points.
Frome Technical High have won all five games played so far in Zone B and appear to be rounding into some form after a ragged start.
The Boysie Nicholson-coached Frome could just manage a 3-2 win at home against Cambridge in the first round, but will get the nod to win easily today.
Clovis Crooks scored two goals on Wednesday to take his tally to six for the season and will lead the Frome attack against Cambridge who have conceded nine goals.
Cornwall College who play lastplaced William Knibb in Zone A, seem certain to return to the Inter-Zone round this season after missing out last year for the first time in over 20 seasons and lead Zone A on goal difference over St James High, both on 12 points. Cornwall have played one game less, while William Knibb, the zone winners last season, are yet to earn a point.
Manchester High and Spalding both had 1-0 wins over today’s opponents DeCarteret and Christiana, respectively, and will be hoping for a clean sweep.
There are two interesting games in the competitive Zone C, leaders Grange Hill hosting a dangerous Petersfield and Mannings hosting Godfrey Stewart.
Grange Hill have a three-point lead over Petersfield and will be hoping to increase their lead today by repeating their first round win.
Grange Hill have won four straight since their opening round 2-2 draw against Godfrey Stewart and have scored scored 13 goals over that span.
The Audley Thomas-coached Petersfield will be gunning to avenge their only loss of the season and today’s game should provide fireworks.
Mannings have been inconsistent, but should get the better of Godfrey Stewart to stay in contention.
Long-time rivals Munro and STETHS will lock horns once again at the STETHS Complex in Santa Cruz where the host will be seeking to avenge their first round loss.
STETHS’ most recent loss at home was to Munro in the 2004 season.
Munro lead Zone E with 13 points, one more than STETHS, both comfortably ahead of third-placed Newell High.
