    Glenmuir-Bustamante game blown off

BY PAUL A REID Observer writer
    reidp@jamaicaobserver.com

MONTEGO BAY, St James — There was confusion and disappointment at Monymusk yesterday after referee Kevin Morrison prematurely blew off the daCosta Cup Zone I match between champions Glenmuir and Bustamante with less than 10 minutes to go.
Glenmuir led 10-0 at the time of the stoppage when it appeared the official called a halt to the game after the Bustamante coach James Garwood failed to leave the field in a timely manner when ordered to do so.
The situation appeared to have been blown out of context, however, as both schools reported similar understanding of what took place.
Garwood told the Observer he had tried for “about two minutes” to get Morrison’s attention to an injured Glenmuir player and had to raise his voice to get the official’s attention.
He told the Observer Morrison told him he could not stop the game then, but the Bustamante coach questioned that decision as he said it appeared the player was in serious discomfort and had been left on the field too long without attention.
He said at that time, Morrison asked him to leave the field and he backed off “about 20 steps, then stopped to talk to a youth.” It was at that time, he said, that Morrison called off the game.
Warren Simpson, the Glenmuir coach, concurred with the reason for the stoppage, telling the Observer it appeared to have been “a big misunderstanding”.
Zone chairman LC Wright, Kemps Hill will have to rule on the outcome of the game.
Garvey Maceo, meanwhile, beat Old Harbour 4-0 to extend their lead in the group to four points. Ashton Bennett, Richard Allen, Derron McLeod and Mikhael Howell were the scorers for the Jeffrey Hewitt-coached team.
Seaforth High and St Thomas Technical scored wins over Yallahs and Paul Bogle, effectively eliminating the losers, along with Morant Bay from Inter-Zone considerations.
Seaforth blanked Yallahs 3-0 thanks to two goals from Kavin Bascombe and one from Maghate Duncan to move to 16 points from six games — five more than St Thomas, who have played a game less.
Swayne Thomas scored his second straight hat-trick to lead St Thomas to a 5-0 win. Clayon Whittle scored the other two goals.

Can anyone see the major difference between these two articles on the same game....

    Glenmuir rout marred

    WESTERN BUREAU:
CHAMPIONS GLENMUIR were leading Bustamante 10-0 in their Zone I fixture in the ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup yesterday when the referee called a halt after the Bustamante coach refused to leave the venue after he was ejected.
Before the stoppage, a rampant Glenmuir seemed on course to eclipse the 12-0 thrashing they gave Tacius Golding on Saturday, as goalscorers Drion McNain (four), John-Ross Doyley (two), Ricardo Webb (two), skipper James Thomas and Ramon Whitter were all in full cry with five minutes to go in the game.
    Injured player
While no member of the Bustamante team was prepared to go on record, it is believed the dispute arose from an allegation that the referee was ignoring an injured player lying on the field. The Bustamante coach took objection to the situation and registered his opinion quite strongly. In other games played yesterday, Garvey Maceo continue to lead the way in Zone I after a 4-0 trouncing of Old Harbour, which lifted them to 13 points and should keep them one point ahead of Glenmuir - should they be awarded full points for their unfinished game.
The 76-team competition will continue this afternoon with 27 games in 11 of 13 competing zones.

Lying on the field - heh!

Sickko, this report said Bustamante people were mum about it. The other one didn't.

      What did you notice?

Aah..that Munro and then US College education. You are right but I will go a step further and bet you the reporter at the Daily Misleader either never tried to contact anyone from Bustamante or had no way of finding anyone so he lied.

When I found the guy he would not stop talking and volunteered his full name before I even asked for it.

Journalists, unfortunately do this way too often, they come up short and try to find ways to cover their shortcomings.

Another one is talking about 'experts say this and experts say that when they are really trying to push their own opinions in news articles or say fans are calling for some thing when it is really they who are doing it but dont want to upset anyone and so stay in everyone's good books. Tony Becca was the best at doing that.

Especially that US College education! What would I have done without it! Mawnin, HL!

So, what do you think should happen now with the game prematurely clled off?

I do wish that others may begin to see the tricks of the journalism trade. Can't tek everything as gospel. That's why I get a little antsy when this very forum does not make the distinction between joke, opinion and fact. Admittedly, the forum really should not be burdened with such responsibilities, but many of us have begun to rely on it as such.

For justice to be done the game must be completed with or without the Bustamante coach..if the game is awarded to Glenmuir in the boardroom it would be by a two goals margin and so the goals scored by the boys would not be valid, nor should they replay it from the start.

10 love?!! it look a like the mercy rule should have been invoked.

A side leading 10-0 with 10 mins to go yes, blow it off. In the Us they have a 'mercy rule' when a side scores more than (maybe 6) in the first half..the game is blown off. We seem to wallow in humiliation. No schoolboy sid eshould be getting 24 and 12 goals against them...the opposing coach should 'throw in the towel' and say the side the embarassment

Nonsense...there can be rules for schoolboy football. In the US again..high school soccer there are mandatory water breaks. I am sure FIFA didn't rule on that...but then if a kid dies of heatstroke in Jamaica..no one gets sued..it would just be 'hard luck'.
