Young Mannings player in hospital for observation

SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland — Mannings’ first-year striker David McKenzie spent a second night in the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital last night after he suffered what is thought to be a concussion during the team’s 2-0 loss to Petersfield in Zone C of the ISSA Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup in Savanna-La-Mar on Wednesday.
Diana Gopaulsingh, head of the Mannings sports department, confirmed yesterday that McKenzie was being kept an additional night for more observations and that a CAT scan had been done and they were awaiting the results.
McKenzie was, however, reported to be in very good spirits late yesterday and Eaton Bruce, coach of the Mannings team, told the Observer the player was in a “jovial mood” while entertaining members of the team and classmates who visited him in hospital.
Bruce, who also spoke with McKenzie’s mother, said the player reported he was not suffering from the headache which had bothered him up to mid-afternoon yesterday.
The 15-year-old, who scored on his daCosta Cup debut against Little London on September 19, was injured late in the game on Wednesday and was taken off minutes after entering the field as a substitute.
He was observed being taken to an area away from the field by his mother and other members of the Mannings staff and was later taken to hospital, where he was admitted.
Eaton had told the Observer earlier in the day that he, along with other members of the Mannings staff and McKenzie’s family, stayed with the injured player until after 10:00 pm Wednesday to ensure he was all right and also returned to visit him yesterday.
McKenzie was not the only Mannings player to suffer an injury in the game as goalkeeper Antonio James had to be taken out in the first 15 minutes after suffering an injury.
James, who is also a member of the school’s track & field team, had given up a seventh-minute penalty after fouling Orpheous McPherson as his team lost for the first time in three games and slipped off the top of the standings in Zone C.
Grange Hill lead the group with seven points — one more than Petersfield and Mannings.
