Central, Old Harbour score big yesterday

MALVERN, St Elizabeth — Central High and Old Harbour High both scored big wins in Zone I yesterday as the ISSA Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup schoolboys football got into full swing across parts of the island.
Central High scored the biggest margin of victory in their four-year history in the competition with a 7-0 win over Bustamante High, while Old Harbour rebounded from Saturday’s big loss to Glenmuir to hammer Tacius Golding 5-1.
Both Central and Old Harbour join Glenmuir on three points at the top of Zone I.
The losing schools, Bustamante High and Tacius Golding, were given a not-so-warm welcome back to the competition after missing the past few seasons.
Dean Hylton and Errol Reid scored two goals each as Central went on a scoring feast at the Effortville Community Centre as Carl Goodwill, Gregory Morgan and Clayton Bryan also got on the score sheet.
At Soya Oval, national Under-17 representative, Dane Kelly, grabbed two goals as Old Harbour cruised to a big win. Kelly’s brace takes him to the top of the scoring charts after just two games on three after he scored once on Saturday against Glenmuir.
Javaughn Smith and Anthony McFarlane also scored for Old Harbour.
There was also a double for Sheldon Davis in Annotto Bay’s 4-0 win over St Mary High to take the lead in Zone K on goal difference ahead of Brimmervale and Islington.
Brimmervale blanked Tacky 3-0 with goals coming from Orane Dixon, Sanjay Ennis and Jermaine Sarrier, while Islington were 2-1 winners over Iona High.
Eight more games are scheduled for this afternoon including four former champions Munro College, St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS), Clarendon College and Vere Technical bowing into action.
Expectations are high in the hills of Malvern as Munro College kick off their season in Zone E against Lacovia, a team they have never lost to and have only dropped one point in the 12 times the teams have met.
Hopeton Gilchrist will make his official debut as Munro’s new coach and will hope to do so in style.
Munro whose most recent appearance in the finals was in 2000 when they were beaten 4-0 by Cornwall College, are expected to make an impression this season and will hope Marc Lyn, Moses Watkiss and experienced goalkeeper Errol Reid will be able to get them over the hump.
STETHS open at home in Santa Cruz against Newell who they blanked in the last three meetings between the teams, including 6-0 and 8-0 last season.
STETHS are rebuilding after losing a number of their best players from last season, but will be hoping to avoid losing to Newell as they did once in the 2005 and 2006 seasons.
Clarendon College are one of the dark horse teams and getting past Claude McKay at home should be a mere formality, especially after winning by 2-0 and 3-0 margins last year.
