  • Solution to the Million Dollar balls- The Buying Issue.

    Addressing the buying issue

    Rumours
Rumors persists that the Big schools in T&F and football recruit potential stars before GSAT examinations, these youths are recruited from poorer schools who traditionally have been secondary and primary schools. Others have complained that this gives these Big schools an advantage because of their buying machinery which consists of an Ole boy network who are able to sell the brand name of the school along with other perks, the complaints have been that most of these youths are used and discarded after service with nothing to show for it, the most critical an education of the most basic need, reading and writing.

That said it is a rumored problem that needs to be addressed, 1st the rumor. If we can point to the top three schools in T&F and football and find that they have athletes transferred into these athletic powerhouses, then that rumor stands to be true based on circumstantial evidence, if that pattern seems to be annually perpetuated, then I would put money on it as it being a fact.

    Problem

That said, I don’t see the problem going anywhere, it’s an opportunity for us to plant a progressive way forward and deal with an issue that did not just start, but which has been going on for decades and seems to be exploding in its hypocrisy of yapping.

    Solution

The solution is simple, in the USA, colleges offer scholarships for amateur athletes, aren’t our athletes amateurs? So what is wrong with implementing a system which is in place, in the NCAA.They call it recruiting, and offer youths scholarships with perks, housing and education.

    Suggestion

Every school except for the winners of their respective trophies be open to recruitment, where

    a) The winner and runners up of B &G champs, Manning & Dacosta (all school boy football cups) are excluded from the process of recruitment. This negates a policy of domination
    b) Every School there after is entitled to recruit two youth for a specific discipline be it track and field or football, or whatever discipline they deem necessary.
    c) Once recruited for a discipline they can only part take in that disciple for a full year.
    d) If recruited for a dual discipline they revoke a year of recruitment.
    e) Stipulations for competing for a discipline are X standard of education must be maintained.
    f) Failure to maintain X standard will result in that school being exempted from any recruitment for 3 years.

    Conclusion

A school like Munro and Campion can recruit a 2 youths a year up to 5 and 6 th form and challenge for a cup in 4 to 5 years, maybe less depending on the talent pool the school has available. What this means is that schools have to dig deeper to find talent and upgrade their education. It seems everyone wins, even the yappers.

Of note : recruitment should not be dependent on passing or failing GSAT.

The biggest problem is there is no action when someone is guilty and we as nation rather the rumours.

There is a youth name Todd Gurley who was the favorite for the Heisman Trophy and the best football player in Georgia and maybe college. He was caught selling autograph by his school and he was suspend by the school who report it to the NCAA. He sat out games and was suspended for more as this was minor violation but if he had play the school would have to give up any games they won during that time. If the school didn't comply they would lose scholarships and punished further but because of quick action they were given the pass.

This the kind of action ISSA want to take but first they need an independent commissioner.

The system I proposed would not need much in the way of enforcement , if these recruited youths were subjected to annual academic test ,that show progress, those that fail would be sanctioned.Academic test that should be transparent for any school to call upon to view that student progress.

My suggestions are just proposal that can be tweaked, it is raw.

true but enforcement is biggest problem you have in the system in Jamaica school sport. When last you hear a school, ref, administrator been punished for violation?

          Kindly define "guilty"...

Guilt implies the breaking of some law, rule or regulation. What rule-breaking are you seeking to cure?

Finally some intelligent thinking on this issue.

However policy should not be based on rumor or the yapping of uninformed observers... many with suspect agendas

Policy should be informed by hard data... So the first step should be to commission a study to gather the data required to establish the nature and scope of the problem. Additionally any study done should include a representative sample of schools.
Focusing only on the top performers may mask some undesirable practices of others.

It is not only the schools at the top that recruit or "attract" student-athletes. Many schools do it.. some even recruit foreign students in a bid to up their game ...
However only a handful of schools are attractive enough to be considered by most of the top athletes in track or football... so outside of that handful the remaining schools can't win championships

Scientific method requires knowledge of the size and nature of the issue before any fixes can be applied... that is IF fixes are indicated

Good chat! ...should get the yappers thinking!
                ...and should lead to solution(s).

...perhaps even the unintended consequence of a spread to all schools of professional approach to teaching our kids "the sports"?

Well let us examine ALL the parties involved, the school that is being raided should be compensated.I think it would be best just to leave the youth dem where they are, those financially strapped school will have an incentive to be feeder schools.

Students and their parents have the right to determine which school is best for them...period. It is not for third parties to decide that issue.

However if any school is disadvantaging any student for any purpose that must be curbed... strait

If third party schools feel disadvantaged by the choices of students...too bad. They just need to figure out how to make themselves more attractive to be able to compete

Aren't there feeder schools now to a select few?..Thats why certain schools get barred from recruiting if they win trophy's to balance out the feeding system in the X proposal. You see with schools questioning other schools maintaining the X standard of education by transparency or red eye, those that violate pay an Xclusion penalty others benefit. The non traditionals will rise.
