Why this year’s champs could really be the best ever.

Every year, we talk about ‘This year’s champs being the best ever.’ But is this just talk or is there really something different about the 2014 champs?

Even before the season started, we noted that a major difference with all other champs, was that there were FIVE individual world youth gold medalists that would be participating in champs. Even more special, is the fact that two of those athletes (Yanique Thompson and Jaheel Hyde) are championship record holders and Yanique Thompson is the world record holder in the 100H hurdles with the distinction of being the only female youth hurdler to run sub 13 seconds.

But even though we will rave about the participation of these 2013 youth athletes, the Pre-Champs performances of athletes are more than enough reason to believe that these championships will be unique.

    Class One Boys
    ------------------
    For the first time ever:
An athlete (Jevaughn Francis) is expected to run sub 45 seconds in the 400M.

Never before have we had boys running sub 46.5 before champs. Allen (46.11) and Francis (45.9) have already done so.

Nine Class one boys (Manley, Allen, Henry, Crooks, L. Williams, Doodnaughsingh, Francis, Baker, Hyde) have already run sub 47 seconds and two (Manley, Francis) have already run sub 46 seconds.

One school (St. Jago) has three boys running below 46.5..... and they still lost the 4 X 400M at the Gibson Relays.

A class one sprint relay team (C’Bar) has already run 39.6 (champs record is 39.78), and four other teams St. Jago, KC, JC, Wolmers all expected to dip below 40.00.

One school (St. Jago) has four boys Chambers, Walker, Manley, Chin all running 10.4 or better (and we have not yet seen Rattray).

Four Class I boys (Francis, Hughes, Minzie, O’Hara) have already run sub 21 seconds over 200M.

Triple jump – Three Boys (Wasome (15.72, Brown (15.77), Lewis (15.86)) have already jumped over 15.70M. The record before 2013 champs was Wilbert Walker’s 15.74M and is now 15.83 by Clive Pullen.

Sprint Hurdles – Tyler Mason has already run 13.46 (-0.2w). The record before the 2013 champs was Keiron Stewart's 13.53 (McLeod NJR now reigns supreme at 13.21).

For the first time in years, three boys in the 800M (Dawson, Robinson and Hamilton) have already run sub 1:52, with Belafonte, Morrison and Fullerton expected to join that group.

For the first time in years three boys in the 1500M (Dawson, Fullerton, and Rochester) have already run sub 4.00 with Hamilton, Belafonte expected to join that group.

    Class II Boys
    ---------------
One Boy (Chambers) has already run 10.28 (champs record is 10.34) with two other boys below 10.50

First year CII boy (Matherson) has already run 10.50

First year CII boy (Bann), has already run 47.2 over 400M. (Record before 2013 champs was 47.24). No first year class II boy has ever run so fast before.

Class two boys team (KC) have already run sub 41 and rumors of sub 40 abound.

Class II boy (Butler) has already split 1:52 seconds in 4 X 800M

Two CII boys from the West (Barrett, Nedrick) have already thrown over 16M in the Shot.

Two CII boys from the west, Barrett (53.81), Elliot (52.75) have already decimated the champs Discus record of 50.75

    Class III Boys
    ------------------
A Class Three boys sprint relay team (C’Bar) has already run sub 42

A Class three boy (Chris Taylor) has run sub 49 and rumours of sub 48 abound.

A Class III boy (Wilson) has already run sub 22 second in 200M.

Four CIII boys (Wilson, Russell, Hamilton, Gordon) are expected to run sub 11.0 seconds over 100M

    GIRLS
    ------------------
So many girls have already below 11.6 - J. Smith, Bonner, Helps, Hyde, Shaw, Spencer, C. Williams. And the sprinting picture is not done. Cameron has not run a 100M but is certainly in that group. Y. Thompson, D. Johnson are expected to join that group and other juniors Dallas (11. 46), S. Williams (UTech) will make their presence felt after champs.

In the 400M, 6 Girls (Loney, McNeil, Houghton, Leith, A. Hall, James) have run below 54 seconds with Spencer, Eubanks, A. Knight, and Cameron expected to split sub 54 in relays.

First year class III girl (Shaw) runs 11.55

Class Four girl (Kiara Grant) has run below 12 seconds (twice) before champs.

Last year, Rochelle Burton (while in class III) ran faster than the class II record in the 100M hurdles event. She ran 13.32 at world youth when she was still in class III

Last year’s Carifta Bronze medalist and Class III champs 100M winner Shellece Clarke runs a PB (11.88) and places 4th at Carifta trials.

    Conclusion
Never before in the history of champs have we has so many pre champs performances that can be consider unique. One has to conclude that the 2104 champs could truly be the best ever.

    It's going to be amazing!

What I can't get over is how confident these youths are, I almost bust out laughing when Ohara said he is looking for 12.9 on 110h and now Donks saying 44.6 pn 400, which is not beyond the realm, but whatever happened to playing it low and busting it high, now they playing it high up front, super high, it's a new breed Jangle, we have never seen anything like these guys before.
