  • Samuda salutes St. Georges and Wolmer's

    Much respect.
From the Chairman’s Desk: An Open Letter to the Coach, Captain, Team & Parents of the Manning\Walker Cup Team

I wanted to write this prior to the Manning Cup final so that its is clear that what I write has nothing to do with winning that Cup – which I fully expect that we will! It has to do with what I saw yesterday in that ‘heart attack’ semi-final!
I saw two very disciplined teams of boys, battle cleanly, skillfully and courageously towards victory. I saw a passion to be the best and to represent their respective schools with distinction. I saw a refusal to give up, to surrender. I saw fixity of purpose and a will to win. I saw calm under pressure finally squeeze victory from defeat. Then, amidst ecstatic celebration, I saw graciousness from both the victors and the vanquished. All in all, I saw much of what we teach at Wolmer’s and much of what makes the human spirit indomitable.

I am so happy that I returned to the Island in time to catch the last minutes of play.
My congratulations to St. Georges College, great champions and worthy opponents. Congratulations to our youngsters, fine ambassadors of the Wolmer’s Tradition of Excellence. Congratulations to the Coach, Captain, Team, Parents and all who support our football programme. Leadership, effort and support have always traveled together towards victory.
Whether we win or not on November 23, we have already won. Both St. Georges and ourselves. That our schools have produced such fine young men is a tribute to what we insist on in our schools. At Wolmer’s we have been able to meet and keep that balance of Academic excellence, sporting achievement, extra-curricular distinction and personal discipline, which is the bedrock of the Wolmer’s Tradition of Excellence. That Wolmer’s Tradition of Excellence, remains a beacon to others.
Thank you, from a grateful Wolmer’s Family.
Regards and best wishes for a historic victory.

    MILTON J. SAMUDA
    Chairman
