... by some youngsters (now big man ) whose school either was not competent to enter schoolboy football competition or gallantly tried to compete but invariably ended up being wiped out (even by relative minnows) with embarrassing domino-type scorelines....

What horrible scarring their psyche must have suffered.... where does one hide??

The scarring is clearly permanent in some...persisting even decades later.... especially with no medical treatment being sought for the wounds

Well rather than seek psychological counseling, I guess it's easier to try to salve the injury with sanctimonious & disingenuous calls for schoolboy football to be disbanded because it is the basis of our football "problem"
