Fuss mi hear dat...but if true dats irrelevant today.. a mere speed bump in our 228 years of glorious and unmatched service to the nation

JC is currently leading an education reform revolution... and is the nation's most innovative educational institution by a country mile.... and historically the most valuable high school franchise

The guy has a point generally that sport is over-emphasized in Jamaica...as is music and other forms of entertainment....that's obvious to me

Where he is at sea with no paddle is trying to link every deficit in academic performance to supposed sport-centric behavior...without any basis other than "feelings"...so we see the lemmings follow that idiotic path even on this forum

The matter needs not "feelings" but scientific research by social scientists

Too much yapping on this subject...not enuff data

Enough already with the hyperbole. Can we see some focus on the simple things, like mathematics and english? Oh, robots don't speak english!

          Sorry!

Where is the hyperbole?? A great case can be made that:

            1. JC's record of contribution to national development is unmatched historically. If not please name the HS with a superior record

            2. Jamaican education needs reform and a STEM focus (some dinosaurs may not realize this however) . If not JC...who is leading that reform?

            3. The choice is NOT Maths/English OR Robotics....in fact there is no choice as they all have value. Your premise is faulty. Mats/English are core RRR subjects which are theory based. Of course competence is essential.

Robotics is an application based extra-curricular activity (a club) designed to get kids excited about STEM careers and some practical experience in tech subjects... it's brilliant in that mission...dats it.

In December 2012, the city of New York approved the development of an applied science and engineering campus, Cornell NYC Tech, a 12-acre site slated to open in 2017. The institution will debut a new interdisciplinary curriculum with the goal of spurring innovation and economic growth. More important, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has launched a pilot programme, beginning September 2013, in 20 middle schools and high schools which is expected to grow 3,500 students by 2016. The schools will offer comprehensive computer science and software-engineering curricula, with core topics in computer programming, electronics and robotics.

                  VISIBLE POTENTIAL LOCALLY

In light of these US-based initiatives, it is remarkable that in a country like Jamaica, where the Government lacks funds to support novel educational programmes like that at the high-school level, Jamaica College (JC) offers comprehensive programmes in robotics and aviation. More remarkable is the fact that these programmes have been in existence for at least four years.

The quality of the robotics programme can easily be assessed by JC's performance in the US-based FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) competition. As the only Caribbean high-school competitor, in its four years of competing, JC has climbed from 65th in 2010 to two top-four finishes in 2012 and 2013.

FIRST, founded in 1989, engages more than 300,000 students with a mission to motivate and inspire student interest in education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math.

Can't do those college subjects without high school Maths and Englsh. JC will recover but its a sport academy right now.
The same type of thinking that created a problem cannot be used to solve the problem.

                      I don't think so. Try 1998 - 2000.

I am not even a wrong blu supporter, but even I will acknowlegde an attempt at a turnaround there.

StGC faced many of the same issues...one whole year when the MoE mixed up passed for Holy Trinity and StGC and in the early 1990s when teacehrs left en-bloc for Farrin.

There have been a gradual turnaround there as seen in the results, however we no longer have the super dediccated priests with their Masters Degres and pHDs like before and not even sure if we still have a DEAN of Discipline there.

However, the great schools will always come back as they have latent resources unlike many others...
