A tiny northern Wisconsin high school with an enrollment of 42 will be unable to continue in the next round of the Wisconsin girls' high school basketball championship.
South Shore High School beat Mellen, 65-53, in the Division 5 regional championship game. Wisconsin schools play in divisions according to size of enrollment. Divison 5 is the smallest.
Of the 20 girls in the school, 11 play basketball. Nine of those 11 also play in the 14-piece school band.
After South Shore won the regional, the band set off on a trip to Seattle scheduled long beforehand. Two of the girls volunteered to stay behind and fly to Seattle later, but with only four members of the team remaining, South Shore was forced to forfeit its sectional semifinal gane scheduled for Friday.
