Champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) took over sole leadership of Group Four of the inter-zone round of the 2010 ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel daCosta Cup yesterday when they handed the previously unbeaten Claren-don College a 2-1 defeat in their game in Santa Cruz.
By virtue of their win STETHS, who got both goals from top marksman Denmark Gillings, have now moved up to four points, while the Clarendon team is in joint second place with Grange Hill, who had a 2-0 win over Spaldings in the first game of the Frome Sports Ground double-header.
"I thought we played a very good game today, especially in the first half," said STETHS coach Andrew Edwards, whose team had started the inter-zone round with a 0-0 draw against Spaldings. "Our destiny is now in our own hands ... another win on Wednesday should put us in the quarter-final round."
Awesome form
Rusea's, who started their Group Two campaign with a 4-0 spanking of Spot Valley in mid-week, were again in awesome form yesterday, brushing aside the challenge of St Mary Technical 5-0 in the first game of a Jarrett Park double-header. Top striker Brian Brown got four of the five goals.
The 'Russians', who now have maximum six points, just need a draw from their final game to emerge winners of the group. Spot Valley rebounded from their loss against Rusea's with a 2-1 win against Brown's Town.
"As I have said before, we are taking it one game at a time," said Rusea's coach Anthony 'Follies' Williams. "We have now got by Spot Valley and St Mary Technical so our focus has now moved to our final group game against Brown's Town on Wednesday."
Former champions Glenmuir, who were also impressive first-round winners against St Thomas Technical, were again in prime form yesterday, blunting the challenge of Buff Bay 3-0 behind three goals from Paul Wilson. By virtue of their win, they are now sole leaders of Group Five with maximum six points.
In the other Group Five game, St Thomas Technical rebounded from their first-round loss with a good 2-1 win against Charlemont High at Dinthill Technical.
Garvey Maceo made it two wins from two starts in Group Six, scoring a big 3-0 win over Titchfield to move to six points and within a point of a place in the quarter-final round. In the other game in the group, Old Harbour opened their account with a 3-1 win over Paul Bogle, effectively ending the campaign of the beaten Ben Francis Cup finalists.
In Group One, St James High and Marcus Garvey Technical remained locked atop the standings on four points each, after they battled to a 2-2 draw in the feature game at Jarrett Park. Frome Technical rolled back into contention in the group, clipping St Mary High 2-1 at the Frome Sports Ground to open their account with three points.
In Group Three, Lennon High have established a stranglehold on the group after they defeated Munro College 5-1 to move to six points on Friday. In yesterday's lone Group Five game, Manning's' campaign came to an end when they drew 1-1 with Manchester High in the second game at the Frome Sports Ground.
