DEFENDING champions St George's College showed true championship mettle by beating Wolmer's Boys' 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller in their ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel Manning Cup match at Winchester Park yesterday.
National Under-20 and former Kingston College striker Rohan Roye grabbed a three-timer as the Light Blues twice rallied to secure a good victory.
The famed Light Blues from North Street moved to nine points from three games, but remained second in Group E behind Spanish Town High, who hammered Edith Dalton-James 4-0 to be on 10 points from four games.
The other group game between St Jago and Ardenne was rained out and has been rescheduled for a later date.
Wolmer's, who were losing their first match in four outings, remain in third spot on five points and will have their work cut out to qualify for the next round.
Playing in front of a packed house on the lush lawns of Winchester Park, home team St George's were silenced after scoring an own-goal in the 10th minute.
The visiting Wolmer's had the upperhand, but once the rains came, so too did St George's, who came running all over their opponents and quickly seized the initiative with two goals in seven minutes.
Roye levelled the scores in the 24th, then saw his free-kick slip from the grasp of Wolmer's goalkeeper Omal Knight and into the net in the 31st for a 2-1 lead.
But Wolmer's responded even quicker in the second half with strikes from Omar Holness and Tedroy Jackson in the 49th and 51st, respectively, for a 3-2 advantage as the rain ceased.
The heavens opened again and once again, St George's took control, and this time for good.
Kenor Anderson benefitted from a collision between goalkeeper Knight and centre-back Khamaal Scott and tapped into an empty goal to once again level the scores in the 67th.
Roye, warming up for national duties in Guyana early next month, pounced on a rebound which hit the upright from a Oshane Booth free-kick and rammed home in the 84th for his third goal and the winner for a jubilant St George's.
